While I am far from having tried nearly every vegan restaurant in the United States like my friend and fellow vegan Kristin Lajueneese of Will Travel for Vegan Food, I consider myself both a foodie and a connoisseur of vegan food. No matter where I happen to be traveling, I make grand efforts to seek out vegan dining options. And most of the time, I plan ahead by doing my own research as to where to eat long before I arrive.
This past year I have spent many weekends in the San Francisco Bay Area. It wasn’t until I started eating a diet of 100% plants that I discovered that San Francisco is one of the top hot spots next to Portland, Oregon and New York City, for all things tasty and vegan. This last summer I attended a pop-up vegan food event catered by Hella Vegan Eats. It was a “pop-up” event in the sense that the food was prepared and served in a non-permanent location, in this case in an existing restaurant/bar, where the public was invited. Owners Tiffany and Sylvee Esquivel are the creative duo behind Hella Vegan Eats which is a catering company specializing in delicious vegan food, and by delicious I mean truly scrumptious.
The taste of their food was some of the best vegan food I have ever eaten. Ever. And, I have eaten a lot of vegan food since going vegan in the past five years. On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being the worst and 10 being the best) I would rate Hella Vegan Eats as a 9.5! Please note that their menu changes depending on the event and location. Here’s a sample menu and some of the items I tried (no, I didn’t eat all of the food pictured below, I shared it amongst friends) :
While I clearly didn’ try everything on the menu of offerings at this particular event, I did sample five out of the seven items and all completely blew my little vegan cowgirl mind. I am still kicking myself that I didn’t try the Doughnut Burger Supreme. After all, who in their right mind wouldn’t want to eat a veggie burger wedged in between two doughnuts as buns!?! All in all, the items I tried had good satisfying proportions, the food was well-worth the price and the tastiness had me going back for more.
Where can you try Hella Vegan Eats? If you live near the Bay Area or have a trip planned, you can find Tiffany and Sylvee in Mission Dolores Park in San Francisco on most Saturdays and Sundays as they just recently went mobile (food trailer style!). It’s best to check their Facebook page for the latest on their location, menu and status. Hella Vegan Eats recently advertised that they’re still available to do local catering events for the upcoming holidays, so be sure to look them up if you’re nearby and need a healthy and creative caterer for your event or party! And the next time you are in the Golden Gate city, make sure to plan a trip around one of their pop-up events or at least be sure to visit their food trailer. You will not be sorry you did. The food is hella good. Be sure to tell them that the cowgirl sent ya.
