Restaurant Review: True Bistro in Somerville, Massachusetts

Less than 48 hours ago I landed in Boston, Massachusetts for a quick getaway to celebrate the New Year. Though my main reason for flying out east was to visit friends and ring in 2014 listening to my favorite folk singer Ellis Paul, I knew I’d be visiting some vegan eateries along the way.

Last night I had the pleasure of not only meeting some of my online vegan friends for the first time in person, but also trying the well established True Bistro restaurant in Somerville as well. I had heard great things about this restaurant for quite some time and that says a lot coming from someone who lives 3,000 miles away!

True Bistro restaurant is quaint and contemporary and I’d consider it slightly upscale, though you can definitely get away with casual dress. It’s definitely not your average 100% vegan restaurant in more ways than one. The service was great as was the location, not far from the popular Davis Square. And, not to mention, the food was truly superb. It’s no wonder, as I understand that the chef previously worked at San Francisco’s Millennium Restaurant (known as one of the best fine dining vegan restaurants in the country).

My taste buds were tantalized by the unique flavors and I was delightfully surprised at how many of their dishes looked and tasted like some of the food I used to eat when I was a pre-vegan, and all without using faux meat. View their sample dinner menu below.

And now for the deliciousness that I enjoyed:

Because there were three of us and we didn’t want to miss out on any samplings, we each decided to try a salad and then split three of the small plates.

5. Flourless Chocolate Cake                                  6. Banana Bread w/ Maple Bourbon Walnut Ice Cream

I am convinced I could have fooled some of my seafood-loving friends with the Cornmeal-Crusted Oyster Mushrooms as they tasted so much like the oysters I used to eat many moons ago, not to mention, their horseradish-dill aioli sauce was something to get on your horse and ride home about!).

I highly recommend trying True Bistro the next time you find yourself in the Boston area. The food is phenomenal and I am tempted to say that this restaurant may just fall into my “Top 5 Best Vegan Eats” list. The prices are reasonable, the atmosphere is lovely, the staff was friendly, and the eats were nom nom delicious! Even though the portions aren’t as large as say a typical restaurant, I left feeling totally satiated and happy. And, even if veggies aren’t your thing, believe me, you’ll want to go back to try everything on the menu!
