Product Review: NadaMoo! Organic Vegan Coconut Milk Ice Cream

I’m not sure you about you, but I am clinging onto every minute of the warm weather. Summer is my favorite time of year and even though I love wearing my vegan cowgirl boots, I do love sporting flip flops all summer long. There are slight hints of fall coming on here in Northern California, but I am not throwing in the towel on summer just yet. Besides (vegan) BBQ’s, corn on the cob, fresh picked tomatoes from the garden and watermelon, the other summery food is of course ice cream. And what better way to celebrate the ending of summer than with one of my all time favorite coconut milk based ice cream companies? If you aren’t familiar, I’d like to introduce you to NadaMoo! non-dairy, gluten free, kosher, organic, and of course totally vegan coconut milk based ice cream.

I have a long standing history with Nadamoo! going back about seven years to when I lived in Boulder, Colorado and worked for an ice cream company during my pre-vegan days. The ice cream company co-packed NadaMoo! so I’ve actually experienced putting these fine non-dairy dessert into their pints during production in their early days. I recently discovered that NadaMoo! was still in existence after I bumped into them on social media. They have changed and added some new flavors since those Colorado days and now have ten flavors. Since I’m unable to get the products in my local area, the company was kind enough to ship me four flavors to sample so that I can report back to you on my findings. Here’s the “scoop”:

Mmm…Maple Pecan – This ice cream truly tastes like the Maple Pecan I remember from my childhood. My grandpa always ate Maple Pecan so this reminds me of him, and I am certain if he were here today, he’d not know the difference between this and the dairy version. It’s particularly sweet and because it’s made from coconut milk, it’s deliciously creamy, not to mention the pecans give it a nice crunch. This is a must try for sure!

Ingredients: organic coconut milk, fair trade certified organic agave nectar, organic tapioca syrup solids, organic inulin, pecans, natural maple flavor, organic guar gum, sea salt, organic locust bean gum. CONTAINS TREE NUTS (COCONUT, PECANS). 

Sweet Cherry Lime – This was probably my least favorite of the flavors. I love both cherry flavor as well as lime, but I thought they made an odd combination. While coconut milk and coconut ice creams tend to be creamy, this flavor tasted more like a sorbet to me, perhaps that’s because of the high fruit content.

Ingredients: organic coconut milk, fair trade certified organic agave syrup, organic tapioca syrup solids, organic inulin, natural red cherries (cherries, organic cane sugar, water, corn starch, natural flavor, pectin, citric acid, purple carrot concentrate for color, locust bean gum), natural lime flavor, organic guar gum, sea salt, organic locust bean gum. CONTAINS TREE NUTS (COCONUT).

Lotta Mint Chip – This is hands down this is the best mint chocolate chip ice cream I have ever had! It’s creamy, delicious, and tastes just like the Mint Chip I remember from my childhood, but without the added food coloring and cow’s milk. I ate almost the entire pint in one sitting, it’s THAT good! If you are a Mint Chip fan, put this ice cream at the top of your list.

Ingredients: organic coconut milk, fair trade certified organic agave syrup, organic tapioca syrup solids, organic inulin, fair trade certified organic chocolate chips (organic cane sugar, organic cocoa liquor, organic cocoa butter, organic vanilla) organic mint extract, organic guar gum, organic spirulina powder (for color) sea salt, organic locust bean gum. CONTAINS TREE NUTS (COCONUT).

Vanilla Cha-Cha Chai – While I don’t consume a lot of caffeine, I will occasionally treat myself to an iced or warm chai. It’s my very favorite tea so naturally, I was anxious to sample a chai flavored ice cream. This flavor is delicious; it’s the perfect blend of vanilla and chai, it will most certainly rock your world, especially if you are a lover of chai tea.

Ingredients: organic coconut milk, fair trade certified organic agave nectar, organic tapioca syrup solids, organic inulin, natural chai extract, natural brown color, organic guar gum, sea salt, organic locust bean gum. CONTAINS TREE NUTS (COCONUT).

I cant say enough about this wonderfully yummy Austin, Texas based company. They definitely have set a high standard for vegan ice cream that even those who despise coconut will love. There flavors are both broad in terms of variety and truly unique when it comes to flavor and taste. Look for Nadamoo! frozen non-dairy desserts in your local co-op or health food store even if you aren’t a plant based eater, I challenge you to try these, you’ll be so glad that you did. Besides, with ice cream this good, you can ditch the dairy and get your (n)ice cream on!
