Product Review + Interview with Emmy’s Organics

In March, while attending Natural Products Expo West, the largest natural products trade show in the world, I met up with Samantha Abrams, co-founder of Emmy’s Organics. In my eyes, our in person meet-and-greet had been a long time coming because I’ve been enjoying Emmy’s coconut macaroons for quite some time. It was a real treat to meet one half of the company in person. That’s what makes a trade show like Natural Products Expo so exciting. You can actually meet the faces behind companies both big and small, and in many cases, meet the founders themselves.

Emmy's Choc Chip Macaroons

Check out my short interview with co-founder Samantha which gives a bit more insight into the wonderful company that is Emmy’s Organics. Be sure to read this post all the way through as I review on some of their hottest, most sought after, and delicious products.

C&CG: I love that the company name, Emmy’s, has a personal story. Can you share that with us?

EO: Emmy is actually my partner, Ian’s mother’s NICKNAME. Only close friends and family call her Emmy. We started our business in her home kitchen and the name just sounded the way we wanted it to…like someone you know and trust.

C&CG: After reading about the background of Emmy’s and how the company came about, it sounds like both Samantha and Ian have raw food backgrounds. Are you both raw vegans?

EO: We both have lived the raw vegan lifestyle for long periods of time, Ian the longest though. He lived on a 100% raw vegan diet for about four years. After a period of time, his body changed and it wasn’t the right diet for him anymore. The same thing happened to me. We incorporate a ton of raw foods into our current diets and very much believe that there is maximum nutrition in raw food.

C&CG: After meeting you at Natural Products Expo West a couple months ago, it looks like Emmy’s is expanding. Can you talk a bit about your original products? What the latest is in terms of new products and what direction the company is growing and expanding?

EO: We started Emmy’s with four flavors of our macaroons in 2009. We now offer eight flavors of macaroons. The newest, Chocolate Chip, we just launched at Expo West! We also recently launched a line of cereals called Super Cereal. They are all based with sprouted buckwheat that is lightly sweetened with coconut sugar and each flavor has a different selection of dried fruits and nuts added. They are amazing, I’m in love with them.

C&CG: Where can folks find Emmy’s products? And when are the new products hitting grocery store shelves?

EO: We are distributed the most heavily on the east and west coasts, but our products are also available on our website. We also have a Store Locator on our website that you can check to see if there is a store near you! Our line of cereals and the chocolate chip macaroons just hit shelves in April.

C&CG: If you had to choose one Emmy’s product as your all time favorite what would it be and why?

EO: Currently, it would be our Apricot Vanilla Super Cereal. The flavor is so amazing and the cereal is so crunchy and nourishing.

C&CG: Thanks so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to talk with us Samantha! Keep up the yummy great work you’re doing. Yeehaw!

And now for the run down on all the delicious products that Emmy’s Organics creates.

It’s hard to choose my favorite Emmy’s products because they are all soooo good and they have a great array of products to choose from. All are completely raw, gluten free, organic, vegan, non-GMO and made in small batches in lovely Ithaca, New York.

Emmy's has an array of delicious coconut macaroon flavors

If you were to ask me, I’d have to say that Emmy’s is most well known for their delicious macaroons. If you love coconut, you’ll absolutely enjoy their eight flavors: Lemon Ginger, Coconut Vanilla, Chai Spice, Choco Chili, Mint Chip, Chocolate Chip, Dark Cacao and Chocolate Orange. If I had to pick one, I’d say the Coconut Vanilla is my favorite.

Each macaroon is made with very few, whole food ingredients and is dehydrated at a low temperature to assure that its full nutrients stay in tact. The macaroons are sold in 2 ounce packages and each contain 3 macaroons. These macaroons aren’t thick many that I have sampled in the past. I love the size and texture. Emmy’s macaroons are soft and I are shaped like round discs unlike traditional macaroons. They are practically bite-sized and I think, the perfect sweet treat made straight from nature.

Emmy's Cacao Cereal

Another one of my Emmy’s favorites are their new raw cereals. Each cereal is made from sprouted buckwheat (don’t worry it does not contain any wheat and is completely gluten free). Buckwheat is a seed that is high in fiber, protein, magnesium and zinc. The cereals are sweetened with delicious coconut nectar which has a very low glycemic index. There are four flavors (Apricot Vanilla, Blueberry Cashew, Sweet Buckwheat and and Cacao Coconut) and all available in 11 ounce boxes. I find that because the cereal is so filling, it takes awhile to go through a whole box. The Sweet Buckwheat is my favorite.

I have saved the best for last. Emmy’s creates the most decadent and rich chocolate sauce perhaps I have ever tasted. It’s hard to believe that it’s made with only four ingredients.

Emmy'sChocSauce

Lather this chocolate sauce on top of your favorite non-dairy ice cream, in one of your favorite smoothies, atop a piece of fruit or by the spoonful right out of the jar!

All Emmy’s Organics products are available for purchase on their website as well as at co-ops and major health food stores and grocery store chains across the country. To see a list of retailers who carry Emmy’s products visit their Store Locator to find a store nearest to you.

I can’t say enough about Emmy’s Organics. From their macaroons, to their cereals to their chocolate sauce, all of their products are nutritious, delicious, and made with ingredients that come straight from nature. In fact, you need not have any guilt while enjoying them. Giddy up on over and get yourself some. I make a promise that you won’t be one bit sorry you did. Yeehaw!

  1. I am lucky enough to live and work within a few miles of Emmy’s headquarters and actually assisted them last year with a Limited Edition macaroon using Gimme! Coffee (an Ithaca favorite). All of their products are SO delicious AND gluten-free!

So happy to hear you can enjoy Emmy’s all the way over there in California!

    Great blog post!

    1. You lucky duck! I wish I lived in the same city as Emmy’s Organics! Enjoy them fresh for me. Yeehaw!

    1. Hi Louise!

Great question, my guess is the answer is yes since I believe Emmy’s uses agave as a sweetener which is low glycemic. It’s best to check directly with them as this review is my own and I don’t work for the company. Thanks!
