Dun-Well Doughnuts Done Up Right

From the moment I crossed the threshold into Brooklyn’s Dun-Well Doughnut shop, it was like stepping back in time. Black and white family photographs lined the walls and ragtime music played in the background (on what sounded like an old scratchy phonograph) serenading the customers from all ages and walks of life – young and old, hipster and non. There was a steady flow of eager-eyed doughnut seekers. I was there to try the incredible vegan doughnuts I had heard about 3,000 miles away back home in California. Everyone else that walked through the door was there for the same reason: not the coffee, but the doughnuts.

It wasn’t until I experienced one of  the organic artisan doughnuts that I truly understood what all the fuss was about. Oddly enough, when I bit into my very first Dun-Well doughnut, I noticed that not only did it taste heavenly, but it also tasted just as a doughnut should taste, just like I remembered from my pre-vegan days. It was love at first bite. If you are reading this as a non-vegan, do not fret, these doughnuts will give the doughnuts you have been eating for years a true run for their money.

The creative duo behind Dun-Well Doughnuts is Christopher Hollowell (the “Well” in Dun-Well) and Dan Dunbar (the “Dun” in Dun-Well), both of whom I had the pleasure of accidentally meeting while I was there. They met in college in upstate New York and shared a love of vegan eats. Who knew that years later Christopher and Dan would team up to create one of America’s most loved sweets and run a highly successful business together.

Perhaps the reason why Dun-Well’s has done so well since their 2011 opening, is their array of over 200 unique doughnut flavors. Does a Cadbury® Cream Egg flavored doughnut suit your fancy? How about a Lavender Lemon Curd? Or maybe a Tangerine Basil is more up your alley? One of the most popular offerings is the Peanut Butter & Jelly filled which tastes just as it sounds; peanut butter and jelly stuffed inside a sweet doughnut roll. No matter what flavor you’re looking for, your sweet tooth will find itself fully satisfied here.

Dun-Well’s has taken American doughnut world by storm, as they recently made Thrillist’s list of the top eight doughnut shops in New York City. They’ve certainly made the top of my all-time favorite sweeteries list that is for sure! Do yourself a sweet little favor and stop in to Dun-Well’s Doughnuts if you are anywhere near the great state of New York and be sure to tell them that the cowgirl sent ya.

Yeehaw!

  1. These doughnuts are unbelievable Erin! I agree, it’s a good thing they are 3,000 miles away or I’d be eating them too often!

  2. Great Do-Nutz! Acurate description Kayle! They won the food network doughnut comp with their sake infused doughnut holes one of the owners said. Gourmet status!!!

  3. Thanks Matt! Dun-Well’s is just AMAZING and it’s no wonder they created a sake infused doughnut on the Food Network! Yeehaw!
