You can imagine how excited I was when I learned there was a new book hitting book store shelves entitled Vegan Cowboy. I almost couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw a photograph of the cover on the VegNews Facebook page late last year. I kept thinking to myself, who else besides me is into things vegan and cowboy? It turns out there’s an author named Carol Treacy who lives not too far from me in Northern California. She wrote a book on the two things that are near and dear to my heart.
What do the words vegan and cowboy conjure up for you? I realize that these two words used together may seem like an oxymoron. I get that a lot when referred to as the “vegan cowgirl”. It is possible to be vegan and a cowgirl or a cowboy, but alas, that’s another blog post in and of itself.
Back to the book…
As if the title isn’t enough to draw you in, Vegan Cowboy, is unlike other “vegan” books that I have read. What’s so different? This book is a love story. Though I have seen one other, most vegan books available are vegan cookbooks. The novel is based on the main character, Rae O’Brien. Rae who is content in her life raising her teenage son alone, has given up on love. She jokes “…that the only man who could steal her heart would be a vegan cowboy”. Rae faces a challenging event that changes her perspective and opens her eyes to new ideas. A confident woman, it’s easy to relate to Rae who is a avid lover and advocate for animals. Set in picturesque Petaluma, California, this book takes you on a journey through loss, love, compassion and triumph.
I don’t want to give too much away, but I will say that the book was most definitely a page turner. I couldn’t wait to find out what was going to happen next. This novel can be enjoyed by ominvores and vegans alike and will appeal to those who enjoy romance novels and of course fiction as well. Overall, it’s a fun read and lastly, it gives hope to us single vegan cowgirls who most definitely dream of vegan cowboys.
